You don't have to talk with Nurse Practitioner Cherie Reese for long to understand how much she cares about her patients. For 19 years with Palmetto Health, Cherie, an RN, specialized in acute and surgical care and developed an instinct about a patients' needs. In addition to being a skilled practitioner, Cherie is involved with sharing her passion and knowledge. Currently, she instructs young nursing students at both South University and Midlands tech in her free time.

Working with South Carolina House Calls (SCHC), Cherie now sees patients exclusively by telehealth and averages approximately twenty visits each day. From time to time, she does miss laying hands on her patients but knows telehealth allows her to reach many more people than she could ever see by physically being in the room. She is further encouraged that as many as 30 percent of her patients have no other way to meet with a provider because of ambulatory issues, lack of transportation, or living a prohibitive distance from a medical provider.

For Cherie, making a difference in a patient's life is the reward. Each visit she makes has a specific medical goal, but her patients will tell you the social benefit is also essential to their well-being. Telehealth skeptics believe that the healthcare provided through the service can only be of limited value. Cherie explains that that could not be further from the truth. "The team approach used SCHC provides practitioners access to multiple specialists, including pharmaceutical experts, social workers, diabetic experts, along with specialized equipment like remote patient monitoring and Livi automated medication dispensing. With all of the support and tools at our disposal, I can provide a comprehensive level of care."
