SC House Calls, your Palliative Care Partner

A doctor checks-up on her patient
Palliative Care is specialized medical care providing relief from pain and other symptoms of a severe illness. The idea of palliative care grew out of the hospice movement and is focused on improving a patient's quality of life. Counseling, a critical component of palliative care, is vital in helping both patient and family members set realistic goals based on desired outcomes. The initial discussions about care should be open and honest, and a patients' idea of their quality of life considered before treatment plans are implemented.

With extensive training and experience in Palliative Care, South Carolina House Calls (SCHC) has a distinct advantage when seeing patients in their homes. By understanding the patient's environment, the provider is better positioned to advocate on their behalf. What struggles are they facing? Do they know their medications and proper dosages? Do they have mobility issues within the home that could be resolved with medical equipment?

A patient does not have to wait for a physician to recommend palliative care. Asking and understanding the disease progression and future treatments and procedures will help a patient decide whether palliative care is the right option.
